Today, Car Thing allows users to interact with Spotify’s service either by saying “Hey Spotify,” tapping its touchscreen, turning the dial or using one of the four preset buttons at the top of the player, which can connect you to your favorite artists, stations, playlists or podcasts.ĭuring tests, Spotify found that users preferred Car Thing to their previous in-car media experience and liked being able to use Spotify’s voice commands to engage with their media. Over the years, the device’s hardware and industrial design evolved from a smaller item plugged into the car’s cigarette lighter to a more consumer-friendly product with a big knob, colorful touchscreen, voice control features and lots of different connection and mounting options.

The now $89.99 device - a $10 increase from its limited public release in October - is largely targeted toward vehicle owners who don’t have a built-in infotainment system offering easy access to Spotify, like Apple’s CarPlay or Android Auto.Ĭar Thing connects with the Spotify mobile app on your phone, then uses the phone’s cellular signal (or Wi-Fi, if available) to stream your music or podcasts over the car’s sound system. Will Spotify users be willing to shell out that kind of money for a gadget that only works with one streaming service and is only useful in a vehicle? That will be the true test of the Car Thing’s appeal.Spotify’s oddly named in-car entertainment system, “ Car Thing,” is now available to the general public after initial tests that began in 2019. It will be more interesting to see what happens after this offer is over and the device starts selling for its regular $80 price.

Spotify’s introductory offer of an essentially free Car Thing is no doubt going to create huge demand, especially among Spotify subscribers who don’t own cars with a CarPlay– or Android Auto-compatible system. Saying “Hey Spotify,” followed by commands like: “Play rock,” “play my favorites,” or “play more like this” will be picked up by the device’s near-field and mid-field microphones.
In addition to the big control wheel, touchscreen, and preset buttons, you can use your voice to navigate and control your music. It also comes with three kinds of vehicle mounts, giving you a choice of where and how you place Car Thing. There’s no battery, so you’ll need to keep it powered via a USB cable and the car lighter adapter that’s included in the box.
Other connections work too, like an Aux-in or USB plug. A second Bluetooth connection from your phone to your car’s audio system is how you actually hear your chosen music. A Bluetooth connection from the Car Thing to your phone lets the Car Thing act as a remote control, albeit a pretty fancy one. Car Thing needs the Spotify app on your phone to access streaming content. To use Car Thing, you’ll need a Spotify Premium account and you’ll have to keep your smartphone nearby.
